The Pay-Off

Charles Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris from May 20 – 21, 1927. Five years later Amelia Earhart made the same trip solo, and is celebrated as the first woman to do so. Pick up any U.S. history book and both these stories are there.

But an event that happened 19 years before Lindbergh’s famed flight, 24 years before Earhart’s historic journey and 6 years before Sir Ernest Shackleton’s extraordinary crossing of Antarctica is virtually unknown.
